EAGLE, Colorado — A financial manager for wealthy clients will not face felony charges for a hit-and-run because it could jeopardize his job, prosecutors said Thursday.

Martin Joel Erzinger, 52, faces two misdemeanor traffic charges stemming from a July 3 incident when he allegedly hit bicyclist Dr. Steven Milo from behind then sped away, according to court documents.

Milo and his attorney, Harold Haddon, are livid about the prosecution's decision to drop the felony charge. They filed their objection Wednesday afternoon, the day after prosecutors notified Haddon's office by fax of their decision.

Haddon and Milo say this is a victim's rights case, that Erzinger's alleged actions constituted a felony, and that one day is not enough notice.

“The proposed disposition is not appropriate given the shocking nature of of the defendant's conduct and the debilitating injuries which Dr. Milo has suffered,” Haddon wrote.

As for the one-day notice, Haddon wrote, “One business day is not sufficient notice to allow him to meaningfully participate in this criminal action.”

Milo, 34, is a physician living in New York City with his wife and two children, where he is still recovering from his injuries, court records show.

Milo suffered spinal cord injuries, bleeding from his brain and damage to his knee and scapula, according to court documents. Over the past six weeks he has suffered “disabling” spinal headaches and faces multiple surgeries for a herniated disc and plastic surgery to fix the scars he suffered in the accident.

“He will have lifetime pain,” Haddon wrote. “His ability to deal with the physical challenges of his profession — liver transplant surgery — has been seriously jeopardized.”

EAGLE-VAIL, Colorado — Long before spandex-clad cyclists were a common sight in Vail, Bruce Kelly took up the sport.

It was the '70s. Kelly rarely saw other cyclists when he pedaled along the streets here. (Mountain bikes would not become the rage until the '80s).

One day, Kelly took his bike into a shop for repairs. He was surprised by how much it cost.

“I thought: Well, I'm going to get a book and try to do some of this stuff myself,” Kelly said.

He invested in some wrenches and a bike stand and took to fixing his bike on the porch of his rented Vail duplex. He left Vail for a while but kept riding his bike. He rode to and from classes at University of Colorado at Boulder, where he studied commercial recreation from 1977 to 1979.

I new you when you raced 24 hours of Moab in a t-shirt, I new you when you and I both race for TWP, I new you when you went roady with Mercury, I went to France and watched you lead Lance to his 5th tour victory, in 2006 I felt sick to my stomach after your collapse in stage 16 and then almost burned down the town after your comeback in stage 17. When you said you weren’t a cheater I believed you and defended you even through the ridicule of my peers. I wrote you a letter when you where with Ouch telling you to hang tough, that someday the truth would be known. Why now when the only reason for the “truth” is sorted profit and the spot light. The owner of this bike is Didi Senft - a cycle racing fan from Germany, and builder of oversize cycles. Born in 1952, Didi has long been a fan of the Tour de France. He noticed that the German television commentators would call the final kilometer of each stage 'The Red Devil's Lap': Since 1993, Didi has dressed in a red devil costume and followed the Tour de France around its entire course, hauling his huge bike around on a trailer. He says that he would prefer to be at the beginning of The Red Devil's Lap, 1km from the finish, but the race authorities and French police won't allow him and his bicycle that close because of the crowds, so he usually sets up at the flag which marks 20km to the finish, and often manages to get as close as 5km from the end on the mountain stages in the Pyrenees and Alps.

Road Ride from De Beque, CO to Powderhorn Ski Area

This ride was recommended to me a few years ago by the owner of Venture Sports - Mike Brumbaugh. It is a great spring time ride and the roads are in great shape with new asphalt on 45.5 road. It is located in Mesa County, westbound Interstate 70, Exit 62, De Beque. Just of the exit ramp by the gas station is a Park –n– Ride. Jump on Route 45.5 (De Beque Cutoff Road) and cross over I-70 heading south to follow the Sand Wash past Black Mountain. The county route ends at Colorado 65 just northwest of the intersection with Colorado 330 in the town of Mesa. Turn left on 65-N and go 9.4 miles then right on E25/200 Road that leads you to the base of the Ski area at 8,200 feet. Total ride is around 40 miles with over 3,800 feet of climbing.

Description:
The Colorado National Monument ride is a 40 mile ride through the Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction and Fruita. The ride features spectacular panaromic views of the canyon and the red rock sculptures as you wind along Rim Rock Road.

It does cost $4 dollars for bicycles so be sure to bring some cash with you and they now require all bikes to have a front and rear light to use when you go through the three tunnels!

Our Route:

We started from the hotel in Fruita, La Quinta,on HGWY 340 - Broadway, right on South Broadway, right on South Camp Road and warmed up riding to the East entrance of the Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction ride West on Rim Rock Drive climbing up and then descending down to the West entrance then back to the hotel. The total distance is 38 miles from the hotel with 2,800 feet of elevations gain.

The Hopworksfiets party bike was built in, where else, bike- and beer-mad Portland, Oregon, by the bike builders Metrofiets. All you really need to know in order to fall in love with this bike is that it carries not one, but two beer kegs along with a pair of taps to serve the suds.

The mobile bar, a custom build for Portland-based Hopworks Urban Brewery, is a long-wheelbase cargo bike with the load bed up front, which we guess means that pedestrians can’t sneak a quick pint when you’re stopped at the lights. There’s a “sound pannier” at the back, containing an amp and a speaker, and the rear rack is just the right size to carry a stack of pizza boxes.

Just make sure that you nominate a designated rider. When fully loaded, this thing weighs close to 400 pounds, and of course has just two wheels. In other words, it’s not the kind of vehicle you want to be driving while under the influence.

I’ve been thinking a lot about this whole Dr. Christopher Thomas Thompson thing and I think I have a solution. What if we rode against traffic, you know like runners. Just think of the advantages; when cars slammed on their breaks it would be a good thing, you could see what ever crap they are throwing at you from their windows a mile away, when they pull over to kick your ass for riding two abreast they would already be behind you. Music 'The Funeral' by band of horses

Danny MacAskill, 23, has produced a set of moves including a backflip off a tree, riding across spiked railings and leaping across three-storey buildings.

His mini film, Inspired Bicycles, has had more than a million hits on the video website and has earned him enough live shows and sponsorship for him to give up his day job in a bike shop.

Mr MacAskill, from Edinburgh, has mastered an incredibly dangerous form of Bike Parkour (the art of movement).

In Bike Parkour people use every available urban or rural platform to choreograph a set of stunts.

The aim is to move from one point to another as smoothly, skilfully and quickly as possible.

It's a performance on the street - and no step, roof, railing, tree or bollard goes unnoticed.

"When I walk around I probably see the city differently from most people," he said.

"I'm always scouting out good places to do stunts.

"I'll stop to examine every random ledge."

His move are not only technically difficult but extremely imaginative and artistically carried out.

When he does a smooth 360 degrees while going backwards down a set of steep concrete steps, it's hard not to be impressed.

Some of the stunts are difficult and he's smashed several bones and ripped a few ligaments over the years.

"I've got a pin in my wrist but I've been lucky not to have any serious injuries so far," he said.

"Although now I've said that, I'll probably smash my head in."

Mr MacAskill has been a keen trials biker since he was a child on the Isle of Skye.

Flipping down concrete steps and hurtling off buildings can be pretty punishing on his bikes and he's constantly having to replace them.

"They take a good battering from me," he said.

He is set to perform at the Original Bicycle Festival in Dumfries and Galloway.

He will take part in four separate events with his stunt team 'The Clan'.

People in south-west Scotland can see him live at four different venues at the Original Bicycle Festival which runs from May 9 to 24.

It is designed to celebrate the region's links with cycling including its mountain bike trails and status as the birthplace of the pedal cycle.

Dominic Monypenny, my renter from last winter, sent me this link to I guess it is a sport called indoorcycling? Looks like some type of synchronized swimming on a bike for two. In the past I thought indoor cycling was the act of jumping on the trainer (rollers, mag trainer or spin bike) and riding in the winter season to try and stay in shape!

Officials at the Eagle County Regional Airport invited the community to “Romp the Runway” from 4:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009. The event celebrated the reopening of the airport to commercial air traffic and featured a unique sprint-style bike race, a 5K fun run, a children’s obstacle course, a “Paint the Plane” contest and a chalk aircraft drawing contest, plus a spaghetti supper provided by the Town of Gypsum Fire Department.

This bike video of the bierfiets is from Amsterdam. It is a bicycle-driven ambulatory beer bar, as well as constant inspiration supplied by its many bikers showing what can (and perhaps what cannot) be accomplished on a bike. Pedal Power Team Training - Aspen

Well... a few of us (Ronan and Family, Stephen and Tessa, Adam, Paul, Macky, Jeff and Family, and our host Andy) went to Aspen this past weekend for a little get away and some time on the bike! What we ended up with was an awesome tour of the Aspen Valley mountain bike style on Saturday... 5 hours on the bike with nearly 6k of climbing! Sunday was a mixed bag with Adam and Paul riding from the Aspen to Vail via Independence Pass, Ronan and Stephen riding to the top of the pass and back, Andy and Macky rode up Castle Creek road and back and Kelly and I rode up Buttermilk mountain and down the Government trail and back to the Poole's house. Great weekend with good friends and thanks to Andy for hosting all of us!!

2009 Posse - Father's Day Ride

After a brief rain delay we rolled out of the Minturn Ranger Station at 8:30 am with about 18 riders. Damp roads to start with but by the time we got to the top of Tennessee Pass the roads were dry and the clouds were breaking up. The Ridler family had a wonderful spread for us waiting at the entrance to Ski Cooper. We all fueled up and continued on passing our normal stop in Leadville to instead stop again on top of Freemont Pass. The enclosed photo is the posse on top of Freemont before we continued on to finish the ride with one smaller stop on top of Vail Pass.

Thanks again to Michelle, Sheryl and the kids for the top notch support all day!

Hi there,

Today we are sending out an email to nearly 3000 people about the relaunch of vailvelo.com. About 8 years ago I was frustrated that our passion and strength as a cycling community did not have a place for all our attributes. Why was Fruita becoming so popular? Why was there a hiker's guide but not bike maps? Why couldn't the shops have a better way to get the word out from Eagle to Vail? How could we better organize and advocate for shoulders along Highway 6 or trail access with the Bureau of Land Management? And, how is anyone going to keep track of everything in one place?

I had discovered that the rich history of our cycling community had created Vail Velo Cycling Club in 1989. So four years ago SOS Outreach created a website for Vailvelo with the hopes that our County's passion for cycling could show how we have more to be proud of than communities like Moab, Fruita, Team Evergreen and Durango. We hoped that the shops could have a chamber of commerce that helped market the cycling opportunities in one place so they could prosper.

VailVelo.com as of today now provides in-depth information on more than two-dozen of the most popular trails in Eagle County, including elevation profiles, satellite and terrain views of trails, difficulty levels and user ratings. The maps were developed with the help of Leislie Kehmeier who is a GIS consultant and creating mapping for the International Mountain Biking Associaition. We are working on adding Google Earth and allowing you to add and correct trails. No place on Earth has this comprehensive of online social network of trail information. Leislie confirms that this is the a first.

Vailvelo.com will only be as good as you the, the most talented, brilliant, and beautiful people in the community, create content by becoming a member and add your own opinions, pictures and videos of trails, as well as keeping others informed on current riding conditions. We spent approxiamately $4,000, nearly the cost of a bike, to revamp the maps to Google Map, create a social network site and manage the site.

"All bikes rise with the trail," someone smarter than me once said, so please help by putting up some information about events, make a groups about your team, list your favorite fitness clubs spin classes, blog about how mad you are about the shoulders needing repair.

The organization continues to promote the Colorado-Eagle River Ride, which benefits SOS Outreach, a youth development charity. The final day for early registration ($90) is Friday, June 26. Wednesday Night - Eagle, CO - Mtn Bike Rides

I attended my first weekly ride with the crew down in Eagle, Colorado (Mountain Bike Capital of the World). Went out by myself for a quick warm up on Bone Yard to the first gate on the forest road where I joined PFD (Peter Davis). We descended back down to Mountain Pedaler Bike Shop to meet up with the rest of the red coats and a few blue coats (Ronan Murray and Chris Cook). At the shop we waited for 10-20 minutes for our group of 4 to grow into 15-20 riders. We headed out the back alleys of Eagle into Eagle Ranch to the race course (Bailey's connector) to the 4th of July parking lot so we could ride Pipeline. Once we got to the Pipeline Trail, John Kish "I love pushing hard and riding fast", put the hammer down and turned the ride into a stop-n-drop (Elgee - Larry Grossman term from the Father's Day ride 2005). So the ride pace was high so it turned into the dirt version of the Ride of Silence in honor of local rider Brett Malin! The reason for the silence was no one could talk since we were all breathing hard from the pace being set up front!

At the top of Pipeline we re-grouped, temporarily, then set out to try out a new cow/game trail (soon to be single-track) that takes off of hardscrabble road to the east that the Pete's recommended. The new loop was about 2-3 miles in length, unnamed so far, and included a few winter run off stream crossings. With minor trail cleaning this could become a nice little addition to the already famous single-track in Eagle.

Ride ended with a dusty decent down Pipeline to the Dusty Boot for a few cold Beers!

White Rim Trail 2009

Background - The White Rim Trail is a 103-mile loop on jeep roads through Canyonlands National Park above the confluence of the Colorado River and Green River in Southeastern Utah. After you turn off I-70 and go south on Highway 191 towards Moab, you turn right towards Dead Horse Point, drive all the way up onto the plateau, and park your car. You can ride the loop in either direction: turning right and dropping down Horsethief Trail, or turning left and dropping down Shafer Trail. Either way, you drop about 1,000 feet onto the rim.

Technically, this trail is fairly easy. But the length (and a few stiff climbs) means you need to be in good condition to do the whole thing in one day like we normally do once a year. We tend to ride it clockwise starting at the parking area off U-313 at the right turn to Mineral Bottom and cut out a 13 mile section of the dirt road from U-313 to Mineral Bottom and park a vehicle at the top of the Horsethief climb. The major climbs add up to 4000 vertical feet, but an altimeter on my Polar Monitor unit that records every little up-and-down came out with about 4,500feet total. Our ride time was, again this year, 7 hours and 30 minutes with total time around 9 hours with stops and a lunch break. The low temperature of the day was 71 and the high was 90 degrees.

Most (smart) riders spend 3 or 4 days to ride this trail, spending the night at campgrounds drinking cold beer! They use a support vehicle for food, WATER, camping gear, and bike parts. (Even though there's little dangerous stuff, the length of this trail -- combined with some sand -- means there's a good chance you'll need some on-trail repair.) Campgrounds are spaced every few miles. (Waiting time for some camp sites is around ONE YEAR. You must obtain a permit from the National Park Service to ride this trail, and reserve your campsites well in advance of your ride.) Bring cooking gear. Open fires are prohibited.

We awoke at 5:15 am from our comfortable Super 8 hotel in downtown Moab to a hot breakfast at Denny’s. We loaded up the two vehicles and were off to set up our shuttle. We started riding around 8:00 am. Those present were the following: Julie Morrow, Wendi Lyall-Fields, Lisa Isom, Steven Kirchner, Chris and Sheryl Cook, and I (Bill MacFarlane). A good group of seven strong riders that rode well together all day long!

Knowing how hot the temperature was going to be most of us started the ride with 2 - 100 oz bladders in our camel backs and 2 - 32 oz bottles on our bikes. Along with all the spare tubes, quick fills, chain tools, lube, cliff blocks, enervatine, gu, sports drink powder, fig newtons, beef jerky, uncrustables, ham sandwich, cliff bars, and of course IBUPROFIN!

The day was HOT to say the least, but fortunately we rode into a head wind 80% of the way and that seemed to keep us cool. We did see one cloud during our ride which gave us a little shade for about 30 seconds. Some of us did run out of water on the trail, but fortunately there were many other supported rides on the trail that helped us out a few times. Thanks to all the nice friendly folks!

When we reached the section of the trail that runs along the Green River some got off their bikes and scrambled down the cliffs and jumped in the river, fully clothed, iPods still playing, to splash and swirl around in a river to lower the core temperature. All felt revived and ready to Get R Done but the confidence didn’t last long.

Running short on water and energy we all had to climb out of this hole one final time 1,000 feet up to the top of Horsethief Trail!

We all made it and when we were off the bikes we did manage to say we would all do it again, but bail if we knew the weather was predicted to be hotter than 80 degrees!

Colorado protects cyclists' rights

Cyclists across the USA have experienced the wrath of impatient motorists. Being "buzzed" by drivers who purposely pass sometimes within inches of riders and having trash thrown at them make up many cyclists' post-ride tales. One state is taking action to help protect bicyclists from dangerous actions of drivers: Colorado. Governor Bill Ritter signed a bill (Senate Bill 148) protecting cyclists' rights to the road into law on Monday. The rule becomes effective August 5.
The new law requires drivers to give cyclists at least three feet of clearance when passing. Violators risk a $110 fine. Throwing an object at a rider could constitute a class 2 misdemeanor, which could net a more substantial $250-$1100 fine and a possible jail sentence of 3-12 months.

Republican Senator Greg Brophy and Democratic Representative Mike Merrifield, both cycling enthusiasts, supported the measure.

Partner Wanted for TransAlp Mtn Bike Race

Hi everyone,
I am looking for a partner for the transalp mountain bike race in Europe this summer. I was lucky enough to get a spot, and I have a very strong partner (Trygve Hutto who was born and raised in the valley and recently returned after medical school and residency), but unfortunately I have injured my knee and I cannnot make the race. It is an 8 day race, averaging 8,000 feet of vertical per day, 40 to 60 miles per day. It basically goes from town to town through the German and Italian Alps. There will be another team from Vail also going and together we were going to hire a driver to cart our stuff around and help out. It will truly be a once in a lifetime trip. Ronan Murray's Dutch Hill Climbing!

Riding into a headwind a.k.a dutch hill climbing per Ronan!

I'm sure you all experienced the 30 MPH headwind today out on the roads. Tyler and I suffered on our lunch ride heading into the wind on the way to Eagle. We just about made it to the red bridge (formerly green bridge) and we pulled the plug when we were going only 4 MPH.

The picture below is what was left of Tyler after this ride!

Tips on riding into a headwind:

* Get into an aerodynamic position. If you are on a road bike, put your hands on the drops or on top of the bar near the stem. On a mountain bike, bring your arms in. Scoot back on the saddle and lower your head.
* Push a bigger gear (Ronan Murray Style). Spinning isn't very effective in a head wind. Drop your cadence a bit and focus on smooth power.
* Ride with another cyclist (more the merrier) and take turns pulling at the front. When you're behind another rider, you'll do about 20 percent less work.
* Smile. A head wind now means a tailwind on the way back.

What is a Lunch Ride?

Spring is here and the Tuesday and Thursday lunch ride from Edwards is up and rolling (weather permitting)! We are leaving from the front of the Inn at Riverwalk at 12 noon. Stuff your lunch in your pockets (if you have any) and join us for a 90 minute asphalt ride. Later in the season when more mountain bike trails open we will convert over to knobby tires and dirt!

Rabbit Valley Rally - April 19th, 2009

Well, the snow stopped flying long enough for some of us to go test our early season form or lack of it, at the first Mountain States Cup race in Rabbit Valley, Colorado just outside of Fruita.

San Gabriel River Trail (SGRT) is a bike path in Los Angeles County, California that I had the pleasure of riding on many times during my vacation in Cali. Katie first took me on this trail the first day we arrived from Denver for an afternoon spin to the Ocean. Her dad recommended we ride this trail, but did warn us to watch out for shopping carts left in the tunnels by the homeless. He had heard of several accidents involving bikes and shopping carts!

In the picture, from left to right, you have the trail and river (cement), one of many railroad bridges with local art, one of a few homeless shelters, horseback riding trail that was adjacent to the bike path, my altitude on the trail at Seal Beach, and high security around buildngs located along the trail.

The South end of the SGRT is Seal Beach. From Seal Beach there are opportunities to ride North or South along the PCH - Pacific Coast Highway - much safer area for a cyclist alone.

The northern segment begins near Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, where riders can continue North into El Monte (via the Rio Hondo), North into Azusa (via the San Gabriel River Trail), or South to Long Beach (via the Rio Hondo bicycle path).

The trail is 38 miles long and the section that I started at, off Florence Avenue, was 17 miles to Seal Beach so 34 miles round trip. Normally I did some Dutch Hill Climbing on the way out to the beach into the nice headwind. With a tailwind return that made the end of the ride smooth sailing.

Riding in Solvang, CA - Fig Mountain

Figueroa Mountain rises to nearly 5,500' feet above the north-eastern corner of the Santa Ynez Valley.

Stephen White turned us onto this ride that had been used by Lance Armstrong and his Discovery Team as a winter pre-season training ride. Starting from Solvang the team would climb over the mountain and then complete a 100 mile loop.

Katie and I planned to do just part of the ride ... the 5,500' mountain.

We started from Solvang after laying around all morning waiting for the marine layer to burn off so we could ride in the sun.

We went to the only bike shop in town - dr j's - www.drjbikeshop.com - and got some great directions, lube and air.

The loop started on Highway 246 heading south out of Solvang, then on Armour Ranch Road, Baseline, then onto Happy Canyon Road where this picture was taken of Katie riding through the valley of cattle and horse farms. Happy Canyon turned into Fiqueroa Mountain Road as it kicked up. The ride was tough since both of us have not done any real climbing this year on the road. The total ride was around 50 miles and took us 3.5 hours. The total vertical was around 5,000 feet for the complete ride. Most of the climb near the top I was out of the saddle standing which I normally HATE to do! Another strange stat was that I had to ride around two rattle snakes in the road on the way up.
